Please, before participating in the discussion, complete the assigned readings and watch the videos of the two persuasive speeches – one by a student, and another by Martin Luther King. You should also have the text of King’s speech in front of you for annotation.Discussion participation consists of two steps:First, decide what appeal stood out to you in each speech and write a short commentary on the use of that appeal in the chosen speech.You should have two paragraphs, one for each speech. Aim for 100-200 words in each paragraph.Appeals offered for discussion include logos, ethos, pathos and kairos. Please notice that figurative language is usually a part of pathos as it elicits an emotional response. I have heard, however, strong cases relating figures of speech to logos as well. Suggested organization:In the opening sentence name the speech and identify the appeal that stood out to you. Define the appeal briefly in your own words. Explain how the appeal was used in the speech – illustrate it. Finally, evaluate whether or not the appeal was used effectively and how you come to such a conclusion.
